A seed is GMO when it is the result of a human intervention to alter the species DNA in a lab. The objective is to improve a trait to offer some benefits. For example, an Israeli tomato was genetically modified to last longer. This allowed them to stay for longer times in a ship while being transported to Europe. As a downside to this, the resulting tomato had less nutrients and the taste was not as good.
